Why Shop for PVC-Free School Supplies?
PVC is the most toxic plastic for our health and environment – and is widespread in school supplies such as backpacks, lunchboxes and 3-ring binders. Unfortunately children are uniquely vulnerable to toxic chemicals released by PVC school supplies, even at low-doses of exposure. PVC products often contain harmful chemicals such as phthalates – over 90% of which are used in and can be released from PVC products.
Phthalates have been banned in children’s toys, they’re still legal in PVC school supplies our kiddies come in contact with on a daily basis. Phthalates harm children’s health and development by interfering with natural hormone functioning and have been linked to birth defects in baby boys, testicular cancer, liver problems and early onset of puberty in girls—a risk factor for later-life breast cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that phthalate levels in humans exceed levels shown to harm human health. Phthalate levels are highest in children.
